About this Item

162pp. First edition. Original cloth and leather spine label. Bit of wear to edges of label, minor staining to spine. A very good copy of a highly entertaining account of catch-as-catch-can naval service by a wry and articulate onetime officer in the Merchant Marine who was appointed by Gen. Benjamin Butler in the early days of the war to outfit various ragtag vessels to assault the Carolina coast. After failing in that with this fleet of ‘barges,’ Saltonstall was mercifully appointed acting master of the frigate ‘Minnesota,’ in time to see her nose bloodied by the C.S.S. Ironclad ‘Virginia.’ In autumn 1862, Saltonstall was given command of the steamer ‘Commodore Hull,’ a converted ferryboat. Saltonstall eventually found himself stationed at Newbern under orders to engage the Confederate batteries along the coast. This book as a Dickensian flair. It’s filled with witty anecdote and observations of men and the imperfect, sometimes hapless system they served under. An excellent memoir. Not in any available reference. OCLC locates three institutional copies. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-11905174294
