Williams, to whom this volume in inscribed by Prosch, was born in New York City in 1827 and went to California in the Gold Rush of 1849. Following his work in the gold mines of California, Williams came to Port Orchard in 1855 in the Brig Leonesa. He finally settled in Kitsap County, Washington, where he served as County Sheriff from 1870-1880. He died in Seattle in 1909. In a letter to his nephew Albert, postmarked Seattle and dated March 13, 1904, Williams tells of his arrival in Port Orchard and also gives a description of Chief Kitsap. The H.B. MacFarland, to whom this volume is inscribed, may be H.B.
