Description:

Report of Lieutenant E. H. Ruffner, Corps of Engineers to William W. Belknap, Secretary of War, on the Reconnaissance in the Ute Country (Colorado), Season of 1873. Original 100-page report plus original map, drawn by Assistant H. G. Proutt, C.E. and printed by N. Peters, Photo-Lithographers, Washington, D.C. Extracted from House of Representatives publication, 43rd Congress, 1st Session, Ex. Doc. No. 193. Condition of 100-page report: near fine; complete charts and tables. "Preliminary Map of the Surveys in Colorado made on Reconnoissance in the Ute Country, under the direction of 1st Lieut. E. H. Ruffner, Engineers, Chief Engineer Department of the Missouri, by Assistant H. G. Proutt, C.E., 1873." Map dimensions: 26 inches by 21 inches. This reconnaissance, and resulting report and map, was inspired by the silver and gold discoveries made in the late 1860s on the newly reformed Ute Reservation in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Territory. After Chief Ouray agreed to yet another "peace treaty" with the U. S. Government, the Utes were once again subjected to a loss of the property and consolidated on yet another smaller sections of land known as the Los Pinos Agency and the White River Agency. This consolidation opened up Colorado's Elk Mountains to more prospecting and mineral discoveries, allowing the development of the Ruby Mining and the Aspen Mining districts. Map condition: very good; some light conservation on back of map to secure folds; a touch of tanning at some folds. Report condition: near fine; not bound. Bookseller Inventory # 000062
