Description:

xxxviii, 608, [1] pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 14.75cm. Original full calf leather; boards rubbed with corners worn, blackening at top board edges, "Ellison" prominently written at top of front board with more discreet and faded ink cursive signature "Jno. Beach" at top right corner; spine leather heavily darkened with surface furrows, tears at spine ends with some uplift at heel, spine's red title label likewise darkened but with gilt title lettering still bright. Toning and foxing throughout. Old ink signature (probably circa 1890s) "John Ellison" on front pastedown; small chip at front flyleaf's upper fore-edge margin; antiquarian ink signature "Alfred Cawles" (or perhaps "Cowles") at top right corner of page xxxvii; a few pencil marks found in page margins; rear free endpaper slightly pulled with some tearing along spine edge. Binding is firm. A good antiquarian copy. Page 608 has typeset error so page number is given as "068" followed by unpaged erratum which would be page 609. Aforementioned front pastedown signature is for Centreville, Alabama attorney John Tullis Ellison (1865-1947) who was Bibb County solicitor and partner in the Ellison & Thompson law firm with Judge Jasper Fritz Thompson. Other law books acquired from the Ellison estate had signatures and/or inscriptions from the 1890s evidently when he began amassing a reference collection for his law practice. Cursory online research did not reveal connections for either Beach or Cawles/Cowles to Ellison. Bookseller Inventory #
