House of Representatives, Washingon, D. C., 1864. Hardcover. No dust jacket as issued. Good. Green cloth blindstamped, textured and with the title stamped in gilt. Front and back covers both have a blind stamping stating that it was done by the U.S. Government Bindery there are issues that bound in brown cloth unable to determine which is the first state binding. This is an ex-library book with one paper label glued to cover and what appears to be the remains of another label as well. Library notation on the inside of cover and on page 3 with two inked notations. On front free endpaper are the words "Fort Pillow Massacre". Brown dampstaining and foxing are throughout the book however does not affect the ability to read. The binding and text block are very sound and sturdy. First Edition. Published by the House of Representatives 38th Congress, 1st Session Report No. 65 and No. 67. Report No. 65 128pp. is of the Massacre of the black soldiers that had already surrendered at the Battle of Fort Pillow on April 12, 1864. Report No.67 is 38pp. with four pages of plates showing 8 iluurations of emaciated soldiers with information re: hospitalization and the outcome of their injuries on the backside. On the front pastedown there is an inscription in the year of publication August 10, 64 to a E. W. Moise who appears to be the son of Edwin Warren Moise who raised a Confederate company of "Partisan Rangers," or cavalry, at his own expense during the Civil War. Officially named the Moïse Rangers, the unit fought in North Carolina and Virginia the family epitomizes the fierce allegiance most Jewish South Carolinians felt for the Confederacy. A good sturdy reading copy with an interesting history. Bookseller Inventory # CSM0002-AMHI
