About this Item

First edition in English. With 25 plates from black and white photographs and a large folding map printed in colour. 8vo, publisher’s original brick red cloth lettered in gilt on spines with gilt rules. x, 382 pp. A nice copy, the spine a bit darkened and with some general mellowing typical to books of the period, but solid and firm and free of any spotting. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH BY ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS EXPLORERS AND WRITERS OF HIS DAY. Hedin was responsible for putting Tibet on the map, literally. His surveys and mapping expeditions helped to discover for the world the physical geography of the region. This work, translated out of the Swedish by Elizabeth Sprigge and Claude Napier, is the popular account from parts of the International Sino-Swedish Expedition. Hedin described it as a peripatetic university in which the participating scientists worked almost independently, while he (like a local manager) negotiated with local authorities, made decisions, organized whatever was necessary, raised funds and recorded the route followed. He gave archaeologists, astronomers, botanists, geographers, geologists, meteorologists and zoologists from Sweden, Germany and China an opportunity to participate in the expedition and carry out research in their areas of specialty.
