About this Item

[No place, circa 1928]. 17pp. mimeograph of an original typescript, on loose folio sheets. Old folds. Some light staining, several instances of marginal ink highlighting. Final leaf badly chipped and torn, affecting only one letter of text. Good overall. An early copy of a famous attack on the Lovestone wing of the Communist Party of the United States. Written by Alexander Bittelman in the summer of 1928 at the behest of William Z. Foster, James P. Cannon, and others, the text accuses American Communist leader Jay Lovestone and his followers of being insufficiently militant and aggressive in their attacks on American capitalism and imperialism. The paper makes numerous charges against Lovestone and the "right wing" of the Party, including underestimating the leftward drift of the masses, failing to utilize unions, insufficient use of the CPUSA to educate and mobilize workers, and other tactical errors and philosophical variances. William Z. Foster would replace Lovestone as General Secretary of the Party a year later, in 1929. A scarce and notable example of internecine strife in the Communist Party of the United States during the ascendancy of William Z. Foster. Bookseller Inventory # 993
