Description:

Two (2) vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) sepia-toned single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photos, USA. Publicity portraits of the 17-year-old dancer during her first days in film: as a featured player at the newly-merged Twentieth Century Fox. She was performing in the popular CHARLIE CHAN IN EGYPT and the spectacular DANTE'S INFERNO at this time. Fox started the process of grooming her for stardom, under her original name. The process of turning her from featured player and dancer (in somewhat ethnic Hispanic roles) to "all-American" sex symbol would be undertaken a few years later when her name and appearance would be changed by the powers-that-be at Columbia Pictures. Fox, however, initiated the change which would come about over the next few years. In portrait labeled "F84/63" Rita wears winter fashions in a snowy setting. This image has three creases at the upper left corner and some border soiling. There is also some very light crop marking around her face for the photo's newspaper/magazine usage. Her name is written in color pencil on verso and the ink publisher's stamp has been blotted out. There are remnants of where an attached paper blurb was once attached. In portrait labeled "F84/103" Rita models a hair dressing, her hair braided and pinned to her head and decorated with star ornaments. There is a pencil mark at the middle of the still, which is very light but does go across her cheek. An original publisher's ink stamp is on verso. This represents the process of becoming a star. A very rare early look at the screen goddess. Overall, these photos are NEAR VERY GOOD. Bookseller Inventory # 10449

Book Description Twentieth Century Fox, 1935. No Binding. Book Condition: Near Fine. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) single weight glossy silver gelatin print keybook still, USA. A very early image of the dancing ingénue who became a great Hollywood icon a few years later. She was discovered at 16-years old by a Fox talent scout when she appeared in her father Eduardo Cansino's dance shows. Hayworth appeared in several films for Fox in 1935 and 1936 under her given name. It was not until 1937 when she won a contract with Columbia studios that her name (and appearance) was changed. While at Fox, she went through the rigors of the publicity mill, and this meant endless hours of posing for photo layouts to fill the dozens of fan magazines at the time. This image is part of a series in which she is demonstrating exercise moves and the instructions are included on the typed blurb on the back. Still 89 demonstrates the second position of the exercise. The still is ink stamped "20th Century Fox, Photo by Frank Powolny," and there is also the ink approval stamp of the Hollywood Advertising Advisory with a date of Dec. 20, 1935. Keybook still includes two holes at top of image where the still fit into a stills book. ABOUT FINE. Bookseller Inventory # wf2575

Book Description Fox Films, 1935. No Binding. Book Condition: Near Fine. Vintage original 10 x 8" (25 x 20 cm.) black-and-white glossy gelatin silver print still photo, USA. This was the first feature role for Rita Hayworth (still billed as Rita Cansino) in a full length film. At 16, after years as a dancer in her father's troupe and stage act, she was signed to a contract at Fox Studios. She danced in the film DANTE'S INFERNO and then was cast in a role in the popular Charlie Chan series. She would continue to play under the Cansino name for several years in roles as a dancer and in bit parts, often unbilled, but with her name and credits building into what would become one of the finest film careers of all time. Before she was the more Anglicized star which she became, Rita would play a variety of ethnicities, here in the role of an Egyptian named Nayda. Still is 210/19 and has the title snipe printed at the bottom margin. One of the earliest film related still portraits of this legendary star. ABOUT FINE. Bookseller Inventory # wf2037
