Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 392 pages. Published in 2011. The author's breakthrough "Peter Grant" novel. One of the most sensational literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition. The novel was subsequently published in the United States as "Midnight Riot". All of the other sequel-novels are published as part of the "Rivers of London" Series. Published in a very small and limited first print run (as a hardcover original) of reportedly 5000 copies only that sold out upon publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ben Denis Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London". The most imaginative and most ambitious police procedural-cum-urban fantasy novel AND ongoing Series of our time. "Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London's Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he'll face is a paper cut. But Peter's prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter's ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic" (Publisher's blurb). As Diana Gabaldon raves on the DJ cover, "Rivers of London" answers the all-important, life-changing question: What would happen if Harry Potter, Child Wizard Par Excellence, grew up to become a Private Investigator? He would become Peter Grant. An absolute "must-have" title for Ben Aaronovitch and "Rivers of London"/Peter Grant collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed ("lined") in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: " 'Fuck me I can do magic', Ben Aaronovitch 10/1/2011". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The inscription is Peter Grant's favorite and most-often quoted line. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed, dated, and inscribed ("lined") copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: This inaugural title of the "Peter Grant" Series is a global bestseller, but was published in a first print run of 5000 copies only. As such, copies available online command as much as $500. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant novelists of our time. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0575097566. Bookseller Inventory #

Synopsis: My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known as the Metropolitan Police. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, and my world has become somewhat more complicated. There's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. It's falling to me to bring order out of chaos – or die trying.

About the Author: Ben Aaronovitch was born in London in 1964 and had the kind of dull routine childhood that drives a man to drink or to science fiction. He is a screenwriter, with early notable success on BBC television’s legendary Doctor Who, for which he wrote some episodes now widely regarded as classics, and which even he is quite fond of. He has also penned several groundbreaking TV tie-in novels. After a decade of such work, he decided it was time to show the world what he could really do and embarked on his first serious original novel. The result is Midnight Riot, the debut adventure of Peter Grant.

Book Description Victor Gollancz / Orion Publishing Group, London, 2011. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Jacket by Stephen Walter (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, subsequent impression with number line '3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4'. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some abrasion to jacket along front hinge, spine sunned, corners slightly rubbed and bruised, slight lean. Not price clipped (£12.99), no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg only copy. 392pp. My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit, we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to, and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated, nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden, and there's something festering at the heart of the City I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos, or die trying. Book One of Ben Aaronovitch's fantastically popular 'Rivers of London' series. Future cult classics. Bookseller Inventory # 006008
