About this Item

85 pages. The author notes in his introduction "According to a report of the University of Michigan's Survey Research Center, one half of all the smokers in the city on Ann Arbor where the research was conducted, have changed their smoking habits in some way or another during the past year. Eight per cent gave up smoking completely and the rest either cut down or changed to filter tip cigarettes. Considering the fact that the smokers comprised one half of their adult population, the proportion of public concern over smoking appears tremendous. Since the wirter's previous paper on this same subject one year ago, more evidence has been produced attributing lung cancer to prolonged, heavy smoking. Whether this adverse physiological effect of smoking proves valid or not seems of little concern to the purpose of this study, except for the fact that it adds one more to the various reasons, and this will be a vitally important reason, why people will want to stop smoking. In the University of Michigan survey, only fourty per cent of those who changed their smoking habits said they did so because of the new rumors about cancer. Thio is an old problem. It is a common phenomenon that to many smokers, smoking is not a mere relaxing, pleasureable activity, but an undesirable and threatening behavior with which they feel they have to cope and often times are unable to so. This brings to focus a question raised in the writer's previous paper. Since, from a pharmaological standpoint, it is possible to break nicotine or even much more serious addictions, why do some people, despite their conscious effects and pharacological help, fail to break the habit?" This book is a Dissertation presented to the Faculty of the Graduate College at the University of Denver for the partial fulfillment of the requirments for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
