1st Printing. 45 pages. Published in 2008. Exhibition Catalog. One of the most beautiful exhibition catalogs of its kind ever produced. The first and only edition. Published in a very small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Waterhouse & Dodd: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with gilt titles embossed on the cover, as issued. Art by various contributors. Text by Abigail Esman. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the very first exhibition of contemporary Middle Eastern and Arab art held at Waterhouse & Dodd London from October 7 through 25, 2008. Presents "Routes". Some of the finest and most representative works by leading artists of the ongoing "Arab Diaspora". "Middle Eastern" and "Arab" refer to origin rather than to place. If anything (and the monograph takes pains to cast this fact in a positive light), the artists are dis-placed: Not a single one of them lives in the Middle East/Arab world itself. All of them are exiles by choice, living in London, New York, and the major art centers of Europe, influenced and inspired by their Western counterparts, whether it be Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, or Jeff Koons. The Western influence is manifest, not just allusive, in their work, but it does not mean the latter is derivative or imitative because the Arab aesthetic is unmistakable. Still, it matters (to them and therefore to us, their intended audience, who are yet another anomaly) that their art is about homelands, real and imaginary, as well as the formal possibilities of art that have always characterized Arab art. That their meteoric success has been made possible by Western art collectors with a taste for the cutting-edge and ground-breaking (such as the legendary Charles Saatchi) is undeniable. Shirin Neshat, Parviz Tanavoli, Farhad Moshir, and Charles Hossein Zenderoudi are established names in the art world. Their one Middle Eastern outlet has been Dubai, which has broken away from the rest of the Arab world to embrace Western art, and by extension, the Middle Eastern artists represented in this catalog. "They never lose sight of the aesthetic. If they shock, it is not for shock alone. If they are political, they reach far beyond polemics. What they create is art in its truest sense, and as it was ever meant to be" (Abigail Esman). An absolute "must-have" title for Shirit Neshat, Parviz Tanavoli, Farhad Moshiri, and Charles Hossein Zenderoudi collectors. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO LALLA ESSAYDI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Bookseller Inventory #
