About this Item

Ian Allan Ltd., London, 1982. UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 8 1/2 x 11 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION, ( dj price clipped)144 pages, massively illustrated with 258 photos , index.--------------------------------------------- The first recorded Royal Review of the British Navy took place in 1415 when King Henry V reviewed his ships before sailing to France to do battle in the 100 Years War. Since that date there have been 43 Royal Naval Reviews —held mainly at Spithead — where the might of the Senior Service and some foreign visitors have assembled for review by the monarch. The reasons for holding reviews have varied considerably through the ages. Originally designed to mobilise the fleet for war, as in 1415, they were also instrumental in showing friends or potential enemies the might of the Royal Navy, as in 1869 when Kaiser Wilhelm II was present. But reviews also took on a happier significance in the 19th century when Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee was celebrated by the Review of 1887. Since that date Royal Jubilees and Coronations have been occasions for reviews.------------------------------------------------------ P. Ransome-Wallis has been fortunate to be present at five reviews at Spithead in his lifetime: the celebration of King George V's Silver Jubilee in 1935; the 1937 Coronation of King George VI; the 1953 Review for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II; the Review held in 1963 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation; and Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee Review of 1977. At all these reviews the author has photographed an impressive array of the ships of many nations and these are presented with detailed and informative captions giving an insight into the changing face of the Royal Navy and ship construction over the last half century.
