FIRST EDITION. Brilliant parody of this classic by writer, humorist and lampoon-master Wallace Irwin, which consists of rhymed verses about the joys and sorrows experienced from smoking tobacco. Burlap-covered boards of light chocolate-brown featuring handsome design by Gelett Burgess on front cover of four pipes and artfullyinterweaving pipe-smoke. Pastedowns and first free endpapers, front and rear, of red rice paper. Previous owner's initials on front free endpaper and full inscription (Merry Christmas, _____, __________,Christmas, 1906) on second blank page following. Eight additional decorations by Gelette Burgess, founder of the humorous literary magazine "The Lark," including frontis, the caption of which reads: "I wear Tobaccanalian Wreaths of Smoke". 2cm chip to top spinecap; 1 cm chip to bottom spinecap. Light rubbing to rear board. Moderate bumps to all four corners with rub-through. Crease to RFEP, rear pastedown (binder's error). Light rubbing to endpapers.
