Title: RUPERT BROOKE: POEMS - Rare Fine Copy of The...
Publisher: London, England: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1915
Book Condition: Fine
Dust Jacket Condition: None, As Issued
Edition: 1st Edition.
2nd Printing. 63 pages. Published in 1915. Posthumous edition of the poet's landmark debut collection. Now considered a modern classic. The first of only two collections by the great poet. Should not be confused with the collection called "1914 And Other Poems", also published in 1915 by Sidgwick & Jackson, or the more readily available Second Edition, published in 1916. A beautifully re-bound copy of the Sidgwick & Jackson Edition: Fine leather and cloth binding. Dark-blue leather and cloth covers, as bound. Elegant gilt lines on the cover, gilt topstain, and gilt design on the spine. The spine's gilt titles are set in a pillar-frame design with double gilt rules at the head and foot. Sepia frontispiece of the famously perfect Brooke profile from the celebrated photograph by Sherril Schell. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Rupert Brooke's "Poems". Indelible, Romantic, pre-Modern poetry. In his very brief life, Rupert Chawner Brooke studied at Cambridge, travelled in Germany, and visited the United States and Tahiti. He died a commissioned officer in Skyros on his way to the Dardanelles, and was buried there. His handsome appearance and untimely death made him an iconic figure of the early Modern Period, revered by young people between the 20th century's two World Wars. Brooke's second collection, "1914 and Other Poems", was published posthumously to enormous critical and popular acclaim in 1915. An absolute "must-have" edition for Rupert Brooke collectors. This edition is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Posthumous Edition, the first of only two collections by the great poet, available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on boards) is still in fine condition overall: Every internal page is clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare copy thus. One of the iconic British poets of the 20th century. A fine copy. Bookseller Inventory # 492
