H. G. Wells. RUSSIA IN THE SHADOWS. London: Hodder and Stoughton, . First Edition. Fine bright copy in a Near Fine Original Dust Jacket (lightly soiled, almost inevitable with this cream-colored DJ) and rarely found in this exceedingly nice condition. An important book, written after the author's visit to Russia to meet his author-friend Maxim Gorky (who arranged for Wells to meet with Lenin himself). Wells was a Fabian socialist and thus had moderate sympathy with the cause of the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, although he did not buy Marxist faux-science, nor Leninist dogma. This book explores Wells' pessimism re: the future of Russia and helped his readers understand the chaos and devolution engulfing the Russian people at the time. Worn vintage slipcase. Hammond E19. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells, with McMurtry's bookplate. Bookseller Inventory #
