About this Item

The first and most memorable book in Updike's marvelous tetralogy. Eighth printing, INSCRIBED on the ffep by Updike to the previous owner: ("For John ----- , Best wishes, John Updike"). The first edition was published in November 1960. The fifth printing was corrected and reset and printed from new plates in Feb 1970. This, the 8th printing, was issued in August 1987, with these differences noted: the text of 16 line blurb on the front flyleaf (and written by Updike) is the same but has been reduced by 15 lines with the new typeset. The terxt of the first printing runs to 307 pages; the eighth printing is 309. Blurbs on the backs of the DJs are different, and the texts of "notes on the type" and "about the author" have been lightly edited. The binding of the original has a green spine and light blue boards; the 8th printing has black boards with silver and gilt lettering. Original pages topstained blue/green; 8th edition, yellow. This copy is thoroughly Fine/Fine, pages clean, tight, and unmarked; DJ unchipped unclipped and unremaindered. 1987 price of $18.95 is on the flyleaf, vice $4.00 on the original. A very attractive copy of this seminal book, albeit in a later printing. Bookseller Inventory # 130500
