About this Item

Protected jacket has considerable edge wear and slivers missing at the top and bottom of the spine, price of $3.00 intact, covers in very good shape, binding straight, pages clean and unmarked. First Edition stated on the copyright page. Neugass died of a heart attack in 1949, the same year his first novel was published. He was born in New Orelans in 1905, studied at Yale, Harvard, and Oxford, and spent a lot of time traveling in Europe. His biography lists yacht racing, greyhound coursing, orchid cultivation, movie acting, selling art, and shipping as a merchant seaman, as well as shoe salesman, cook, social worker, fencing coach, housing inspector, janitor, cabinetmaker, machin pattern maker, and foreman. He also published a lot of poems. Obviously he was from a wealthy background and writes well about the wealthy upper class in New Orleans in Rain of Ashes. What he leaves out of his biography is the most interesting thing: he was am ambulance driver during the Spanish Civil War and wrote a good memoir about his experiences, War is Beautiful. In sum, he was an intriguing, if minor American author. His only novel is extremely rare. Bookseller Inventory # 003613
