About this title

A child's excited speculations on what fun can he had with Kate when she comes to play come to an end when a rainy day cancels Kate's visit, but the fun is not permanently spoiled.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2 Rainy Day Kate is a make-do substitute for the real girl. When rain interferes with a planned day of happy play, our small (unnamed) hero falls, in verse, on his own resources. He constructs a play-Kate of stuffed jeans and shirts and a painted face with a contented smile. All the toys come to the subsequent tea-party, and a situation that seemed irretrievably disappointing is redeemed. The story of this little boy who knows how to make the best of things is oh so satisfying. After only a few lines of self-pity (``What a big flop!/ . . ./ I am all alone''), his expression becomes determined. (``I will make a Kate. I know I can!''). The cat looks disdainfully skeptical throughout, but nevertheless joins the party. Readers may feel a twinge of doubt about the success of the pretend Kate, but imagination carries the day. The wet-looking but still controlled watercolors lend just the right rainy-day mood. Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, McKinney, Tex.
