Synopsis: For a number of years, people have commented that I should write a book given the stories I would tell either at social gatherings or for illustration purposes. Many of these seem entertaining and humorous, at least after the fact, but I never seriously considered giving a book much thought; I saw no benefit in simply recording a lot of stories without some greater purpose involved. Then, in the fall of 2009 that began to change. The inspiration to write a book centered on my listening to an arrangement of my favorite hymn, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, and the beginning phrase of the second verse "Here I raise mine Ebenezer, hither by thy help I'm come." This of course is taken from I Samuel 7:12 where Samuel sets up a stone and calling it Ebenezer to memorialize God's help in a particular victory. Understanding that the difficult situations I seemed to be going through would be over at some point, through it all, God has been right there helping me along the way, even working at the process of leading me to positive change. I began to see in many of the stories a common thread of connectedness that many of the incidents of life are a sort of Ebenezer for us. Each chapter attempts to be a catalyst in leading others to the realization that God is always with us, helping us through life's challenging times. The book takes a scriptural look at a number of life events, and with the help of some scholarly direction, and a few general questions for self reflection leads one to contemplate upon their own experiences and see where God has been at work in, for and through them. While heavily influenced by the theology of John Wesley, Raising Ebenezer easily crosses denominational lines, and where people might see themselves on the theological spectrum. It lends itself to, personal reflection as well as study groups or Sunday School class use.
