A farmer in Cateauguay, Lower Canada, Spedon was born in Scotland and taught school for some years in Lower Canada. In the summer of 1862 he traveled from Montreal via the St. Lawrence to Quebec, which city he describes. He then sailed for New Brunswick and the Bay of Fundy.
