About this Item

Octavo. 279p. Illustrated by Peter Hurd. Introduction by Peter Hurd as well as maps by Jose Cisneros and the book is designed by Carl Hertzog. This history covers the early territorial period including Frank Coe's involvement with the Lincoln Count War (he was associated with the Tunstall-McSween faction whose most famous member was Billy the Kid). The historian Richard Oglesby noted there are insights into the Kid not found in the more popular accounts. He writes: "Politics, punctuated with gunshots in the man's world of the 1870's had become sophisticated enough to permit the election of Louis Coe to the sate senator only twelve years after statehood; and she stayed on for three terms. The first regional school in the area began in the Coe living room though Wilbur Coe finished his education at Stanford. The paintings of the Coe Ranch are by Peter Hurd. Both Wilbur Coe and Peter Hurd have signed their names on the front free end paper. Bound in pictorial green cloth centrally stamped with a gold apple, backed in salmon cloth, spine lettering gilt. A fine copy in beautiful unclipped pictorial dust jacket save for a small closed edge tear. Very nice. Bookseller Inventory # 018331
