About this Item

COMPLETE, ORIGINAL and exceedingly rare 14.5" x 13" illustrated news broadside engraved and printed in Germany in 1675. This is an exceedingly early news broadside, illustrating a battle and siege during one of the NORTHERN WARS in Europe. This rare illustrated news engraving shows the SIEGE of WISMAR, Germany by Sweden during the SCANIAN WAR, one of the NORTHERN WARS in Europe. Below the engraving is detailed descriptive text of this siege and battle. The text is printed in the German language. The engraving clearly shows details of the siege and illustrates the 2 most famous prominent landmarks of Wismar, the Church of St Nicholas and the Church of St Mary on the high prominence of the town. Illustrated news engravings from the 16th and 17th centuries were a very early form of news dissemination, and are really "views as news." This original 1675 news broadside is blank on the back. It has text within the engraving informing the reader as to what the important landmarks in WISMAR are in the engraving. Bookseller Inventory # 000061
