In the style of the Whole Earth & Big Rock Candy catalogues, this book was written by a couple who were one of the first to explore "free schools" as alternative methods of educating children in the 1960s-1970s. They get down to the nitty-gritty with details about all the steps involved in creating a school in your own community, highlighting the needs of those from marginalized groups. They offer examples & experiences from the school they started in Freemont (Sonoma Country), Northern California, citing both historical & contemporary ventures. Viewing traditional school as "prisons" that stifle the mind, the book is dedicated to "the millions of children still in prison.and the handful of adults trying to help them,'' in 125 pages, with sepia-toned photos & sketches throughout. Orig. published in 1970, this is the fourth printing of that First Edition from Ma7 1971. Softcover 4to has red paper wrappers lettered in white to front & spine. Condition is VG: completely clean & unmarked inside, but with rubbing (heavier to extremities), tiny dings, edgewear, light soil & foxed spots, mild creasing, & corner curling to exterior. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. Seller Inventory # 022727
