About this Item

J. B. Lippincott, Philadelphia. 1901. Hardcover. Military fiction. First reprint of the 1900 original. Book Condition: slight wear to head and heel of spine and at lower tips; soft front lower tip; partial tear in the front inner hinge; slight spine cock. Blue cloth boards and spine with bright silver lettering on spine and front board with gold wreath and sword handles on front board. No DJ. 320 pp. During the Spanish-American War, a volunteer from a respected family comes into conflict with a couple of deserters, one a dangerous criminal, the other a rival for the affections of the beautiful daughter of General Ray, who works as a nurse for the fledgling Red Cross. The author, a lifelong army man who himself made the rank of general, subtitled this book 'A Story of Manila', but the two skirmishes there in 1898 between the Americans and, firstly, the Spanish, then secondly the native freedom fighters, serve merely as a backdrop to a romance and court case. A greater part of the story is given over to the conflict between the Red Cross and the fictional Patriotic Daughters of America for official acknowledgment from the US government. A very presentable and clean book. The waspish and gossipy Miss Zenobia Perkins, the representative of the latter organisation, is probably the most memorable character in the tale, certainly more so than the eponymous heroine, who merely looks lovely and becomes ill.
