About this title

Essays discuss Delacroix, Henry James, Andre Malraux, Voltaire, Flaubert, Ruskin, Berthe Morisot, Willem de Kooning, Kenneth Clark, and travel

From Publishers Weekly:

Russell's tenure as art critic for the New York Times since 1974 should not blind us to his wider cultural interests. Many of these 53 pieces are portraits that reflect his enthusiasms (Pushkin, Delacroix, baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) or reveal unexpected facets of the people under scrutiny: Edward Gibbon as traveler and flirt, Rachmaninoff as songwriter. A delight to read, this miscellany ranges from a useful definition of the overworked term "postmodern" to an analysis of the early reception accorded Beckett's Waiting for Godot. There are personal reminiscences of Anthony Powell, Clive Bell, Meyer Schapiro, garden designer Russell Page. To be sure, we also find discussions of specific paintings and sculptures: Anselm Kiefer's haunting allegories, de Kooning's explorations of the human figure, American Luminist canvases, etc. Some of the liveliest writing occurs in occasional pieces as Russell sounds off on hotels, wisteria, Verdi's Falstaff and India, "where art and life are one.'
