About this title

Critical essays examine the main themes and central characters of Shakespeare's tragedy

From School Library Journal:

Gr 10 Up--This collection of essays on one of Shakespeare's most widely studied plays should be useful for research. Following the series formula, the book is divided into thematic sections that explore plot, structure, and characters; themes and ideas; and diverse ways of staging and interpreting the play. Each section contains excerpts from established scholars with each entry introduced by a short synopsis of the argument and an overview of the author's credentials. The essays span over a century; some are as recent as 1995. Several of the topics, such as "Social Restrictions Against Illicit Unions in Romeo and Juliet" or "The Influence of Astrology," should pique the interest of young adults. Occasionally, boxed inserts contain quotes from other scholars or from the play itself. The standard introductory biography of Shakespeare is augmented by an overview of the popularity of the play. The substantial list for further reading contains a variety of works on general Shakespearean studies as well as on Romeo and Juliet. While the only extensive film discussion is of the 1968 production, the 1996 version is included in the chronology. An in-depth index concludes this modest but surprisingly substantial volume.
