About this Item

first edition, first printing (not stated); trade paperback card covers; from the library of the linguist, Glenn Gilbert, with his inscription on the ffep, underlining, and marginal notes; SIGNED BY THE EDITOR 'Many thanks for YOUR / encouragement and / help! / Joshua A. Fishman / viii/3/81'; paper hinges white from use, edges rubbed, spine has faint vertical creases, top edge shows coffee stains back cover darkened and foxed, else in good shape, rated G to VG; this was a review copy sent to Gilbert by William Bright, the editor of Language; a typewritten letter from Gilbert to Bright and the latter's handwritten response are laid in; I was in the process of moving from Austin to Carbondale and was unable to complete the review at that time (May 8, 1970); in fact, the review was never completed and my wrestling with the book and trying to digest the disparate ideas in it is what drew me into the sociology of language in the first place; the book is entirely in English except for Heinz Kloss' 20-page genial Das Nationalitätenrecht der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika (puzzling that it wasn't translated to make Kloss' ideas more available to people who read little or no German); the book would be of interest to collectors of books on SOL, which stands for both 'sociolinguistics' and the 'sociology of language', its historical development, and the unique associations with Fishman, Gilbert, and Bright represented in this copy; soft covers are purple, red, and white with white and red lettering; 8vo - 8 1/2 inches tall, 808 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
