About this Item

The first edition and first issue of Nabokov's first novel in English. An unusually nice, near fine copy, with a couple of paste shadows to the rear endpaper and pastedown from enclosures no longer laid in. The coarse (1st issue) red burlap binding and paper labels are remarkably bright and barely worn. Missing the fragile dustjacket as usual. On the other hand, this copy is INSCRIBED BY NABOKOV, a month after publication, on the front endpaper: "For Peggy / with kindest regards / from / V. Nabokov / I - 42 / Wellesley." Beneath the inscription is the label of the Hathaway House Bookshop of Wellesley. 1941-2 was Nabokov's first academic year teaching at the College (and first living in the U.S.). He must have signed this copy for one of his students or colleagues, before his greater fame made him so reluctant to do so. Very scarce signed nonetheless. Unfortunately, Peggy and Margaret were common names at Wellesley at the time, and we have not been able to determine which of them might have been this book's first owner.
