About this Item

Small 4to. Stiff green wrappers tied with black cord. 11pp. Tipped-in frontispiece. Very good. Bit of mild edgewear, else internally fine. Edition limited to 200 copies printed by Chicago's illustrious Black Cat Press founder, Norman W. Forgue (1904-83). President Roosevelt died in Warm Springs, Georgia, on April 12, 1945, leaving undelivered a speech he was to have delivered the following day at a Jefferson Day dinner. This is the text of that speech, as published less than one month later by Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. It has been signed boldly in black ink on the front flyleaf by that shop's founder, Ralph G. Newman (1912-2000), who dates it 5 May 1945, and above him by his business partner there, who also inscribes it: "For Elaine W. Madlener / this humble contribution to a / great epoch / John Valentine / May 5, 1945." In 1948 Valentine would become one of the founders and officers of The Franklin D. Roosevelt Collectors' Association, which for several years published the semi-annual journal "The Franklin D. Roosevelt Collector"; he also published occasional lists of FDR material for sale and was involved in other FDR-related bibliographic endeavors such as an FDR bibliography. Madlener (1913-89) was a well-known Chicago area bibliophile, autograph collector and civic leader. A choice copy with great associations. Bookseller Inventory # 40869
