About this Item

Hardcover octavo in dark green cloth decorated in gilt. 326 pp. plus publisher's list at rear. Frontispiece formal photograhic portrait with facsimile signature of the author by Mora. Fraying to the head and foot edges of the spine strip and bit of wear at the tips. 1892 gift inscription first front blank and neatly repaired hinges. Fifth Edition stated. Cora Urquhart (Brown) Potter (1857-1936), native of New Orleans, visited England with her husband in 1886 where they were weekend guests of the Prince of Wales. One of the first American society women to pursue a career on the stage, Cora debuted in London 1887. She toured the world with her acting partner Harold Bellew for the next several years, most famously appearing in a play titled "Civil War". This is a collection of her stage "recitations" of pieces by Byron, Scott, both Brownings, Longfellow, Harte, Tennyson and so forth. Despite the fact that this book states that it was a fifth edition, copies are remarkably scarce. Bookseller Inventory # E18354
