Near Fine+/: spine ends exhibit two small nicks, else flawless. Text itself exceptionally clean, bright & unmarked. Frontis; Introduction. 42pp. including colophon. Memoirs of the Barstow brothers of their experiences in the California Gold Rush as told to historian Hubert Howe Bancroft in 1877 (Alfred) and 1878 (David) respectively. "The reminiscences of both brothers are used in this book exactly as Bancroft put them on paper, with the exception that the material has been divided into paragraphs with chapter headings introduced" (from intro.) David discusses their landing in San Francisco on 30th of August, 1849 after traveling around the Horn from New Bedford, Massachuetts and setting off for the Gold Fields and Sutter's Mill. He goes on to describe the lynching of Juanita in 'Downeyville', and the miner's life during the Gold Rush. Alfred's briefer recollections include the Indians and the miner's law.
