About this Item

First edition: The youngest of twelve children recounts the thinly fictionalized joys and sorrows of growing up during the early part of the 19th century in a stately mansion in Providence, Rhode Island. This copy bears the inked inscription of Hamilton Hoppin, the author's brother; Hamilton is identified in the book as "H. Auton," who rigged up a pulley-and-basket system above the bed, in which he stashed cold Johnny-cake to be doled out to younger siblings. 8vo. Frontis., 99, [1] pp.; illus. Publisher's quarter cloth with printed paper-covered boards, covers somewhat dimmed, with edges and extremities rubbed. Front free endpaper with inscription as described above.
