The Gazette Publishing Company, IL. Autobiography of Augustus Chetlain, a Civil War General with a long personal connection with Ulysses S. Grant. Chetlain was a company and then regimental commander of the 12th Illinois Infantry. Chetlain held a variety of assignments during the Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier and brevet major general. This memoir describes his war service, which included action at Shiloh. Chetlain also recounts the early history of Galena, and his post-war experiences as a tax official in Utah, where he had dealings with Indians. He served as a diplomat in Belgium, where he met and befriended George Catlin. Very good copy of the first edition. Green board with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Errata slip tipped in. Front hinge cracked. This copy was owned by the Long Island Historical Society. Scarce work. 304 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 20567
