About this Item

[GORDON-MILLER, William L.]. Recollections of the United States Army. A Series of Thrilling Tales and Sketches. By An American Soldier. Written by A Period in "The Service," Since 1830. Boston. 1845. xi,[1],167pp. including eight plates (most touched with red and/or yellow). Frontis. Publisher's cloth, stamped in blind, spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Cloth faded, with scattered waterstains. Occasional foxing, but generally clean internally. Overall very good. HOWES G257. SABIN 68379. Second edition, after the first of the same year. Stories of army life in the West and in Florida, with several charming wood-engraved plates, including one of an Indian council. The introduction to the volume is a scathing attack on West Point, "now an engine of favoritism, mainly filled with the pets of scheming and other influential men" ( Howes attributes authorship to William L. Gordon-Miller, an English-born veteran of the Prairie dragoon campaigns, who was also likely the true author of DRAGOON CAMPAIGNS TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. (1836). Not in Servies. A little-known, but important source for American military actions in Florida and the West. Bookseller Inventory # 48510
