First edition: A popular Boston-born author's second novel, based on her experiences in Charleston, South Carolina, where she settled in 1819 and continued to live through the Civil War, supporting the Southern cause. Contemporary sheep, spine with gilt-stamped leather label; binding much worn and rubbed, spine label partially lifted, spine head reinforced some time ago with library tape. Front joint (inside) cracked, back joint starting. Ex?social club library: paper shelving label on spine, 19th-century bookplate, call number on endpaper, title-page pressure-stamped, no other markings. Several leaves with marginal tears; one leaf torn from outer margin, with loss of about 20 words. Intermittent spots of staining. Bookseller Inventory # 29775
