Modern green cloth, gilt spine, large folding map in pocket on front paste-down. Fine. FIRST EDITION. Alfred Brooks was studying petrography and geology at the Sorbonne in Paris under La Croix, Fouque, Bertrand, and De Launay in 1897 when he was "offered a position on the United States Geological Survey which he promptly accepted and was assigned in 1898 to field work in Alaska. In 1902, after serving the intervening seasons under various parties, he was placed in entire charge of the geologic work on the territory, and to this he devoted his energies until his death, interrupted only by his army service during the world War."
