Volume one only (of two). Folio (13 1/2 x 10 3/8 inches; 343 x 262 mm.). Engraved title-page and fifty-one (of sixty) magnificent hand-colored lithograph plates, many of which are heightened with gum arabic. Plate number one expertly cut and mounted to size on matching paper. Some very light occasional marginal foxing otherwise very clean and fresh.Contemporary quarter maroon morocco over red pebbled cloth boards. Front cover decoratively stamped in gilt surrounding a rectangular maroon morocco label which is decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Expertly rebacked to style, Marbled paste-downs, all edges gilt.This very rare and highly attractive work was originally issued in two volumes, each with an engraved title-page and sixty plates making a total of one hundred and twenty hand colored lithograph plates.Only two copies have appeared at auction within the last 41 years - one in 1975 and the other in 2009. Charpentier, who had been a traditional engraver in Nantes, in 1828, obtained a patent to work as a lithographer. The work includes images of the stilt walkers of Les Landes, wrestlers, fisherman and their women, and many other attractive plates of local trades people."
