The author was a descendant of Jean Grolier & the volume describes & illustrates clocks, lamps, pontoon-bridges, rafts & machinery for raising water & miltary purposes & other curious devices including a reading wheel, collected by his grandfather, a soldier of fortune. pp. [xxviii],101,[11]. Errata leaf at end. With 85 copper plates, number to LXXXVIII, plates 39, 48 & 76 not issued nor called for, as in all copies. The title & dedication leaf with a small stain to upper margin, old clock dealer's stamp to fly-leaf (Rogier Fils) & dedication leaf and also contemporary name to fly-leaf (de Strada), 19th C. name to title (Lavirotte), front marbled endpaper with an inner-margin tear. Contemporary French cat's-paw calf, the spine in six panels, with label, gilt, some slighty wear to the boards & lower front board corner & base of spine, but a clean and pleasant copy. Vg.
