About this title

Synopsis:

This travelogue provides a basic reader for students on the upper high-school level and for secondary-level college students. The author’s expert knowledge of the language and the country has enabled him to give free rein to his love affair with Guatemala. The result is a well-planned exercise in language, complete with extensive notes, exercises, and vocabulary, but enlivened with real-life learning experience. Interwoven with the sights of present-day Guatemala are glimpses into the past of Mayan civilization.

Mr. Davis has drawn from his own knowledge of the country in the careful preparation of this book. The extensive notes are ready aids in grasping the elusive idiomatic phrase. The exercises afford practice in acquiring fluency in formal as well as colloquial expression. As a further aid to gaining an understanding of the language and the culture of the Guatemalans the author has used extensively the refranes, the short, pithy sayings in popular usage throughout the country.

About the Author:

J. Gary Davis is Professor of Spanish at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
