About this Item

Excellent orange hardcover about suburban Philadelphia's trolley system is unbumped, unscuffed, indeed immaculate; tight text block is fresh and clean and incudes laid-in maps. Vivid pictorial white-spined dust jacket has a few very small closed tears around the top, but looks beautiful in a removable clear Brodart archival cover. Bookseller Inventory # 006504

About this title

Synopsis:

Fascinating history of Philadelphia's Red Arrow suburban trolley network. Despite a faltering start with an unsuccessful toll road, horse car line and steam dummy line, the system begain to thrive in 1899 under the leadership of Merritt Taylor and continued to do so under the leadership of his son and grandson. The book carefully examines the early, financially troubled years and then illuminates how the Taylor's expanded the system and kept it prosperous when so many other trolley systems ran aground. Illustrated throughout with rare black and white photos. With 15 maps (2 of which fold out). 189 pages with index.
