Synopsis: In a fun-filled mystery, preschoolers try to determine whether it is actually Red Fox hiding behind the bushes or Dan Dog and Tabby Cat wearing Red Fox's clothes in an attempt to scare their friends.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-A short, lively picture book. Dan Dog and Tabby Cat decide to trick their friends by slipping on Red Fox's clothes and pretending to be a monster while he takes a dip in the lake. Hiding in the bushes, they surprise their animal neighbors by jumping out with the shout "Dinnertime." All goes well until Red Fox is also frightened. Then it dawns on him that he's been tricked, and the dog and cat make tracks fast. The short, snappy sentences and dialogue are perfect for both beginning readers and listeners with short attention spans. The repetitive refrains of "Dinnertime!" and "Help, it's Red Fox," also work well for these particular audiences. The bright, animated illustrations match the zany plot well. Youngsters will appreciate the expressive faces of the characters, from Dan Dog and Tabby Cat, who are filled with mischievous glee, to Red Fox, who is utterly bewildered at the sight of the monster. Readers who enjoy the characters and plot will want to try Baron's Little Pig's Bouncy Ball and Red Fox Dances (both Candlewick, 1996).
