About this title

Over a number of decades, San Antonio entrepreneur Billy Joe "Red" McCombs trained his discerning eye on old silver from the British Isles. Red is particularly fond of sliver with interesting backgrounds, significant historical events or stories of the families who owned them. One hundred silver pieces are in the collection. Beginning the tour with a 16th century silver-mounted tigerware jug and a "decent" cup for Protestant communion wine, readers will wind through era after era, and from style to style, to end with a centenary silver statuette of the heroic Admiral Nelson. Important works of Royal provenance, mix with the ordinary and practical, such as a simple waiter. Always in view are the uses of silver and the roles it played in the daily lives of English and Irish people in centuries past. This book is intended for all who admire what human hands have created. Entremets along the way discuss the ancient craft of goldsmithing, a trade closely related to currency and banking: Why was this trade regulated? Are they works of art? What kind of people commissioned them? Who designed them? What statements did silver make about its owners? Why did so many people aspire to owning at least a spoon made of silver? What is it about silver that continues to fascinate? The McCombs Collection provides the opportunities to address all of these questions. ROBIN UNDERDAHL writes fiction and reviews for literary journals and holds a fine arts master's degree from Columbia University. THOMAS SINSTEDEN, MD, is an independent silver scholar specializing in Irish silver. He contributes to The Silver Society Journal and to publications on museum exhibitions. RED McCOMBS is a San Antonio automobile dealer and businessman. He is best known nationally as the former owner of the Minnesota Vikings, San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets. He also is a co-founder of Clear Channel Communications, the largest owner of AM, FM and shortwave radio stations in the nation.
