First priniting: 1943 on title page, and "A" on copyright page, aoove the "Scribner Press" colophon. Bound in gray cloth with blue type and waves on the front board and the spine. This is the most popular and enduring novel from Swedish novelist and poet Bengtsson (1894-1954), translated by Barrows Mussey. A later translation by Michael Meyer published by Knopf in 1954 as "The Long Ships" is uncommon; this earlier Scribner's edition with the dust jacket (illustration by Frank Hazell) is extremely rare. Book is tight, square, and unmarked; corners sharp; tail of spine bumped. The top of the front flap is corner-clipped but the price is not clipped ($2.50); dust jacket is chipped and edgeworn but no major tears. Brodart protected. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
