Original dark blue vertical-ribbed cloth, gilt lettered spine with ornamental blind stamping, front cover with author's signature in gilt facsimile of and overall blind floral pattern, brown speckled edges, pale yellow floral-patterned endpapers. Binding lightly rubbed at extremities, spine lightly toned, faint pencil blemish at head of p. 349, light mark to frontispiece and tissue guard. A very good copy. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, 10 chromolithograph plates heightened with gum arabic, 34 half-tone plates. First edition, first printing, for subscribers only. This work highly illustrated work; which includes a number of plates by Frederic Remington, details Howard's (18301909) interactions with various Native American tribes. It was also published as a series of articles in St. Nicholas Magazine in 1908. Howard was sent by Ulysses S. Grant as a peace commissioner to the Apache in 1872, with whom he concluded a peace treaty; and in 1877 and 1878 he commanded a number of expeditions against the Nez Percé, Bannocks and Piutes.
