Synopsis: Sitting out the war in a prisoner-of-war camp after he had been wounded and captured in the Dunkirk debacle in 1940 had no appeal for Henry Suggit. From Belgium he was moved to Germany, then on to Sudetenland in present-day Czech Republic, to a party working on the railways. Before long he and two companions had broken away on a first bid at escape. They were eventually recaptured and returned to camp; but thoughts of freedom would not go away. Using all his ingenuity and determination, Henry Suggit went on to make several more attempts at escape from a variety of camps until finally, in spring of 1945, he met up with the liberating Americans. Prison camp life, with its tedium and constant demands on the physical and psychological resources of its inmates, is described here with spirit and good humour; while the author turns the episodes of escape into high adventure. A sequence of lively sketches illustrates his account of two of the break-outs. His German captors and guards emerge as human beings, and his fellow prisoners-of-war are portrayed with all their strengths and weaknesses. Those who may have shared experiences similar to the author's will get a lot of pleasure from this book; and anyone who enjoys real-life adventure will like this tale of a man with 'itchy feet'. The author was born in Hull in 1915. He began work on the fish docks which he combined with six years of voluntary service in the St John's Ambulance Brigade. In October 1938 he joined the Yeomanry and in December of that year he took advantage of an exchange between the Territorial Army and the Regulars to transfer to the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. After being discharged from the army he started a business in Hedon. He served on the Middle Holderness Court for nineteen years and has been a representative on the Hedon Town Council since 1962. He has been elected Mayor nine times and was recently created an honorary Burgess of Hedon.
