About this Item

Scarce Scottish Tract on Taxation Maclean, John Hugh. Remarks On Fiar Prices And Produce Rents. Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable, 1825. [ii], 82 pp. Octavo (7-3/4" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet, neatly removed. Light toning, "2" to head of title page, internally clean. $250. * Only edition. A scarce tract of legal as well as economic interest. Fiar prices, localized average market prices realized during a given time period for the sale of grain and other commodities, were used in Scotland to establish a fair standard of value for taxation. Fiars were used similarly to adjust produce rents, again as a matter of equity during times of economic uncertainty. The author, who was an advocate, discusses, in addition to various economic aspects, the legal origins of fiars, the role of judicial regulation, and improvements to the jury system as outlined in a model act printed at the end.
