About this title

Chronicles the cultural and artistic flowering known as the Renaissance that flourished in Europe and in other parts of the world from approximately 1375 to 1575 A.D.

From Booklist:

Each volume in this set designed for students in grades 5 through 10 is 80 pages in length. More than 220 entries are arranged alphabetically by subject and cover the innovative and tumultuous time period from 1375 to 1575. Focus is on Europe, but the set also touches on other parts of the world important to the Renaissance, including Africa, China, India, Japan, and the Americas.

The set covers a broad variety of topics, among them adventurers and scholars, architecture, geographic regions, religion, and the sciences. A sampling of entries includes Drawing, Giotto, Navigation, and Rome. The majority of the entries are two or three pages in length. Pages are illustrated with paintings, photographs, drawings, and maps, including many reproductions of world-famous art from the period. Each of the pictures is nicely annotated. Entries conclude with cross-references to other entries in the set. In addition, each volume closes with a comprehensive time line to help students relate events in time as well as a comprehensive index. Each volume also includes a glossary and a page of resources for further reading.

The arrangement and layout are appealing, and coverage is thorough. Students seeking a direct route to specific topics from the Renaissance will be well served by this set, which is recommended for school and public libraries. UXL's five-volume Renaissance and Reformation Reference Library [RBB D 15 02], which takes a more thematic approach, offers more detailed biographies and a selection of primary source materials but is not as attractively illustrated.
