Charles Ingersoll, supposedly an advocate of the Union in the Civil War, had written a public letter to a Southern friend, urging settlement of differences by giving in to Southern demands. Thiis reply by Thayer appeals on Constitutional grounds and on precedent for the righteousness of the Union cause and urges no compromise or surrender. Minor chips from spine and lwer corner.
