About this Item

The volume is U. S. Government Document No. 59 of the 36th Congress, 1st Session, and was ordered to be undertaken by the then Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis. 287 pp. of text which includes comprehensive line drawings of numerous items of warfare. In the rear of the volume are 39 folding maps and 25 folding plates, 8 single pages of line drawings including lithograph views of fortifications. This extremely scarce volume was considered at the time the most comprehensive work on military technology of the day and was instrumental in reshaping the Union Army's military technology at the start of the Civil War. The volume speaks to the furnishing/distribution of supplies, hospital arrangements, types of arms, ammunition and equipment, construction of fortification, methods of transportation and much more. This particular report is considered by many to be one of the defining instruments in changing the ways military conflicts were carried out for the future. The volume needs totally rebound. Several of the fold outs have some tears, but all can be restored. An excellent working/reading copy in its present condition. Quite scarce in its entirety. Bookseller Inventory # 31476
