The committee re-submits the separate reports made last session, the resulting bill not having been acted on. The petitions resulting in legislation reserving federal land for the use of the Baptist Church which led to President Madison's famous veto (February 28, 1811) of the bill. Madison opposed it because it appropriated funds "for the use and support of religious societies, contrary to the article of the constitution, which declares that Congress shall make no law respecting a religious establishment." 8vo. 12 pp. Shaw & Shoemaker 24294.
